I graduated from DeMontfort University with a 2.1 in 3D Design in 1992,
specialising in furniture.
As part of the Erasmus exchange scheme, I spent a semester in Copenhagen,
studying at "Danmark’s Designskole" and the "Royal Academy
of Architecture". This was a fantastic opportunity to live and study
in another country.
Project Work
During my final year I submitted three projects:
Rescue stretcher
In response to the low-tech high-weight stretchers currently in use, this
was designed to make use of simple plastic mouldings, and cutting edge adhesives
technology. It was favorably reviewed in Technical rescue magazine.
Zebedee - soft furnishings
This came about as a development of the RSA “fabrics in furniture” project.
It is a direct response to the over priced, over stuffed upholstery industry.
Giving an affordable, washable, yet stylish easy chair. This chair was featured
in the "young designers show" at the Business Design Centre in
London.
Stroget - street furniture
This project evolved from my time studying the use of public spaces in Copenhagen.
The concept was to produce a multi directional seat, for several people,
that reflects the flow of pedestrianised streets.
Additional Work
Since graduating, I have satisfied my creative urges with a mix of design
and product testing for outdoor equipment manufacturers; and increasing
experience of film and TV work, from both sides of the camera:
Karrimor - Expedition Ski Pack
Now this is designing for a small market! As part of Karrimor’s sponsorship
of Plas y
Brenin, I was able to design an expedition rucksack, suited to ski
mountaineering. The prototype was then successfully used whilst guiding
"Kalanag", a 6000m peak in the Indian Himalaya.
“Cumbres de Chile”
A weekly, ten minute, documentary on climbing the “Summits of Chile”.
This was filmed in the Central Andes near Santiago, Chile.
Really Wild Show
Technical and safety support for filming on the streams and rivers of
Snowdonia. The programme followed the path of salmon, migrating upstream
from the sea to spawn.
"Men are better than women . . . "
I took part in the programme titled “men are better than women at climbing”.
This involved the training of the male participants and presenting work
“Brains versus brawn”
A TV series involved a competition between a team trained by sports scientists
and a team trained by the Armed forces. I was filmed, as a coach for the
sports science team and together with Matthew Pinsent. Our role was to develop
the adventure skills of the sports science team.
“Globetrek” - Pilot productions
This involved taking presenter Ian Wright to the summit of Crib Goch on
a truly wild day. Working 'on camera' as his guide, and 'behind the scenes'
as technical support. All credit to the team, the finished footage is awesome.
Other film work includes sea kayaking with Steve Leonard (vets in practice
and wild animals). I particularly enjoy this type of work as it gives me
the opportuniuty to blend my outdoor experience with my creative side.
